Google highlights first search result

If you search Google and are logged in to a Google account, you get its Instant search results - see previous blog post - and guess what our favourite money-grabbing geeks have just launched? Not content with highlighting paid-for listings at the top of the page they’re now highlighting the top one with a blue arrow as if to say ‘click on this one, we think it’s the best’.

All  under the pretext of enabling desktop navigation without a mouse or touchpad - you can use the up and down keys instead. Mmmm, now why are we just a teeny bit cynical? Could it be because the inevitable result will be to intensify competition for the top paid-for listings and hence send Google’s Adwords revenue skywards?

It certainly looks like an implicit endorsement of the paid link over and above the top natural link. And how many people will realise that you can move the arrow up and down - there’s nothing to tell you.

In fairness, if you suss that you can move the arrow, it trawls through the natural results before jumping across to the right hand column’s paid results but if it didn’t this would be just too crass - even Google wouldn’t stoop that low…..would it?
